FAQ

Everything people ask before installing.

What dwells are, how the published split works, what the protocol charges, and how to turn it all off.

Is DWELL really free?

Yes. There is no subscription and nothing to pay to start earning. You install once, keep using the AI tools you already use, and earn dwells while they think. The protocol only takes its cut when you redeem — see the fees question below.

How much can I earn?

It depends on how much you use AI — the more an assistant thinks in front of you, the more sponsored impressions you watch. The published split: advertisers pay fixed dollar CPMs, the token-side tranche — currently ~90% of each ad dollar, a configuration the protocol can change — goes to the campaign pool, and 60% of that pool goes to the viewer — credited to you as dwells. 10% of the pool goes to your referrer (to the protocol treasury when you're unreferred) and 30% to the protocol treasury.

How do I redeem dwells?

Two ways, both in your portal:

1 · USDC to your wallet — face value less the 10% protocol fee, with a $100 minimum.
2 · Claude credits — redeemed at a 10% boost: your dwells buy Claude subscription time at 110% of their face value.

Dwells never convert to $DWELL — the points ledger and the token are separate systems.

What is the $DWELL token?

$DWELL is the protocol's token — a separate system from dwells. It carries no equity rights, receives no ad-revenue flows, and dwells never convert to $DWELL. Supply, allocation, and mechanics are documented on the tokenomics page.

What fees does the protocol charge?

Nothing to start earning. USDC payouts to your wallet carry a 10% protocol fee and a $100 minimum; Claude credits redeem at a 10% boost — your dwells are worth 110% of face value on that path.

How does the split work — can I trust it?

The split is published and auditable: the token-side tranche (currently ~90% of each ad dollar) goes to the campaign pool, and that pool divides 60% to the viewer, 10% to their referrer (to the protocol treasury when unreferred), and 30% to the protocol treasury. Your balance is an open, append-only ledger recomputed from every credit and debit, with amounts stored at millicent precision — so the split is exact, never rounded against you.

Does DWELL read my prompts or conversations?

No. It reads none of your prompts or the model's output. It only detects whether the assistant is currently thinking — a visible Stop button, a busy region, or a streaming marker — so it knows when to show the sponsored line. The terminal client reads only structural transcript metadata needed to tell active from idle.

Which AI tools does it work with?

ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini in your browser via the Chrome extension, Claude Code in your terminal, and the native Claude and ChatGPT desktop apps on macOS. The sponsored line is styled to look native on each surface and only appears while the AI is working.

Do I need an account to start earning?

No — you start earning the moment you install. An email is only needed to link your devices together and to redeem. Sign in with Google or an email magic link at dwellprotocol.com/portal.

Why am I getting emails from freeai.fyi?

Because DWELL grew out of an earlier project, freeai.fyi, and still sends its mail through that project's verified freeai.fyi sending domain. So sign-in links, verification, redemption receipts and referral notices all arrive from an address like hello@contact.freeai.fyi — it's genuinely us, just the legacy sending domain. It's safe to open and trust these emails.

How do my terminal earnings reach my account?

Link by email during dwell claude setup (or later with dwell claude link). Your dwells then show up in the portal alongside your browser and desktop earnings.

Are you affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google?

No. DWELL is an independent product and is not affiliated with Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google. "Claude," "ChatGPT," and "Gemini" are trademarks of their respective owners.

Can I advertise on DWELL?

Yes. You bid for the sponsored line that shows while ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini think — the one moment every AI user stares at the screen. You're billed for impressions only; clicks are tracked, never billed. Set up a campaign →

What is the performance window, and what does Auto do?

Ads for a token can show a recent-change % badge next to the name. The performance window is the timeframe that number is measured over — 5m, 15m, 1h, 4h, or 1d. Pick a fixed window to always show that timeframe.

Auto displays whichever window is showing the biggest, most positive change at that moment — so the badge always puts your best number forward.

How do I uninstall DWELL?

Chrome extensionchrome://extensions → Remove.

Terminaldwell claude restore, then npm rm -g @dwell-protocol/terminal. Add rm -rf ~/.dwell to clear local state.

macOS app — drag Dwell Sponsor Overlay from Applications to the Trash.
